In a country where many people are struggling to make ends meet, Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen has sparked outrage by flaunting a luxury watch worth a staggering Ksh.1.4 million.

The timepiece in question is a Class Fusion Ceramic King Gold, known for its opulence and exclusivity. With a price tag of CAD 13,900, the lavish accessory has sparked outrage among citizens who are already burdened by the high cost of living and struggling to provide for their families.

The image of Murkomen donning the extravagant timepiece quickly circulated on social media, provoking a wave of discontent from Kenyans who expressed their frustration and disappointment.

Many argued that such ostentatious displays of wealth by public officials were insensitive and out of touch with the reality faced by ordinary citizens.

“How can a public official who is supposed to be representing the interests of ordinary Kenyans be seen flaunting such a luxurious watch while many people are struggling to put food on their tables?” asked one Twitter user.

“This is a clear example of how out of touch our political leaders are with the reality of everyday life for most Kenyans,” said another.

The timing of Murkomen’s flaunting of the high-priced watch is particularly ill-fated, given the prevailing economic challenges faced by Kenyans. In recent years, the country has grappled with rising inflation, unemployment, and limited job opportunities, all of which have contributed to a pervasive sense of financial insecurity.

As news of the Cabinet Secretary’s lavish accessory spread, citizens took to social media to voice their concerns.

“This is a slap in the face to all Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet,” said one Facebook user. “Our leaders need to start showing some humility and respect for the people they are supposed to be serving.”

Critics argue that such acts by public figures only serve to deepen the divide between the political elite and the rest of the population.

They highlight the irony that while many Kenyans struggle to put food on their tables, their elected representatives seem disconnected from the daily struggles of the people they are meant to serve.

In a statement, Murkomen defended his purchase of the watch, saying that it was a gift from his wife. He also said that he was not aware of the public outcry over the watch and that he had no intention of offending anyone.

However, Murkomen’s explanation has done little to quell the anger and frustration of Kenyans who feel that he has shown a complete disregard for their financial struggles.

The incident has once again highlighted the widening gap between the rich and the poor in Kenya and the need for greater accountability from public officials.
