The 22-year-old’s previous deal had just over a year remaining, but the club has secured his services for an extended period.
Arsenal Defender’s Journey
Saliba’s journey in football began at the age of six when he honed his skills under the guidance of Kylian Mbappé’s father. He later joined Saint-Étienne in 2016 and signed his first professional contract at the age of 17 in May 2018. The talented defender made his debut for the club on 25 September 2018, contributing to a 3-2 Ligue 1 victory over Toulouse. In his first season with Saint-Étienne, Saliba started in 13 matches.
After signing for Arsenal, Saliba returned to Saint-Étienne on loan for the 2019-20 season, gaining valuable experience and featuring in 17 games. His contributions played a part in Saint-Étienne’s journey to the 2020 Coupe de France Final, although he missed the match as the loan agreement ended prior to the rescheduled final due to the COVID-19 pandemic

While there were discussions about extending Saliba’s loan spell, Arsenal reportedly faced a financial obligation of €2.5 million to Saint-Étienne had he featured in the final. Saint-Étienne, desiring full control over his training sessions, chose not to waive the fee. As a result, Saliba returned to Arsenal on 24 July 2020.
