Teacher dies, eight students injured in collision of school buses

On Wednesday, April 5, a head-on collision involving two school buses in Ndia, Kirinyaga County resulted in the immediate death of a private school teacher and the serious injuries of eight students and school management.

The two buses belonged to Kutus Municipality Primary School in Mwea and Trinity Academy in Ndia. Head of Ndia Police Moses Koskei confirmed the incident. The buses collided on the side, severely damaging their front ends.

The accident took place during the morning hour rush of picking up and taking students to school. According to the Police Boss, the buses were picking up children to school as their usual norm when the accident happened. He disclosed that the buses collided head-on as one of them was driving in an opposite direction while the other was passing by the main road resulting in the accident.

Eyewitnesses also revealed that the driver of one of the buses lost control while trying to overtake the other one that was picking up a student.

“We tried what we could where good samaritans rushed the pupils to different hospitals in Kirinyaga County,” one of them stated.

Police officers from Baricho, Sagana, and residents living along the road took over one hour to help the female school manager who was trapped in one of the school buses.

The manager of Trinity Academy was taken to a nursing home in Kagio with critical injuries, while the eight students were sent to Kerugoya Hospital, according to the police.

It took more than an hour for the female school manager who was trapped in one of the school buses to be rescued by police officers from Baricho, Sagana, and neighborhood people who lived nearby.

The two buses were towed to Sagana police station for examination while the deceased’s body was transported to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

This incident happened a few days after a bus carrying Pwani University students lost control and crashed resulting in the death of eight students and three members of staff.
