The woman appeared before Principal Magistrate Lewis Gatheru of the Makadara Law Courts and was accused of violating Section 3 (1) (d) of the 2010 Counter Trafficking in Persons Act by engaging in human trafficking.
The woman, whose daughter was 16 years old, had gone home to Kakamega County to give birth, according to testimony given in court.
According to reports, she stole the child after promising to care for it and to let the mother, her daughter, return to school.
The infant was taken to a municipal children’s home. According to reports, her daughter was taken into custody on Sunday, April 9, just hours after her mother, the baby’s grandmother, was.
She was brought to the Kasarani Police Station, where she provided authorities with a statement that helped with the investigation. The 16-year-old was named as a witness in the case brought against her mother and would be kept in protective custody during that time.
Principal Magistrate Lewis Gatheru released her on KSh 200,000 bail after she refuted the accusations. On May 9, a hearing for the matter will take place.
