The world’s greatest marathoner Eliud Kipchoge was handed a Kshs. 13.7 million paycheck after his latest exploits in the distance that saw him shatter his own world record by 29 seconds.
The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) mauled the Berlin track Sunday morning, running 2:01:10 at the Berlin Marathon in a dominant victory that left the world of sports and beyond struck in admiration and awe.
The double Olympic marathon was lined up to race against men but, as he often does, found himself racing against time instead as he crossed the finish line nearly five minutes ahead of compatriot Mark Korir who clocked 2:05:58 to finish second, ahead of Tadu Abake from Ethiopia who was third in 2:06:28.
The victory, Kipchoge’s fourth in Berlin, earned him approximately US Dollars 113,000 (Ksh 13.7 million).
Victory pocketed him US dollars 22,600 (Ksh 2,74m), with $33,900 coming in bonuses for running under 2 hours and a bumper US$ 56,500 (Ksh 6.86m) for his breaking his own world record and, for the umpteenth time, proving that ‘No human is limited.’
The 37-year-old now owns four of the five fastest marathon times, only accompanied at the top by Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele.
Prayer and fasting
Kipchoge’s wife Grace Sugut Kipchoge, who watched the proceedings from their home in Uasin Gishu, revealed that she fasted for 7 days for her husband and prayed for a miracle.
“I congratulate my husband for again making history by lowering his world record time. I was in prayer mood for the last one week and I fasted for a miracle to happen. I’m happy that victory has come home,” she told Nation Sport.
