Immediate former Kakamega Homeboyz FC head coach Bernard Mwalala is set to be unveiled as the new manager of four times KPL champions Ulinzi Stars FC.

The coach is set to lead the soldiers in the 2022/23 FKFPL campaign and will be assisted by club legend Vincent Moreiro who has been holding up the capacity of a head coach on an interim basis since the axing of veteran gaffer Benjamin Nyangweso and his backroom crew.

Moreiro, a former Kenyan international has been in charge of the team preseason arrangements and was on the touchline last weekend during a 0-0 draw against AFC Leopards at Nyayo national stadium in Nairobi.

With Mwalala joining Ulinzi, it will be his fourth club to manage in the Kenya’s top tier league after serving with Nzoia Sugar FC, Bandari FC and Kakamega Homeboyz FC being his recent station of work.

In 2016, he guided sugar millers of Bungoma to win the National Super League and earn promotion to the then Kenyan Premier League.

In 2017, his first season in the KPL, he guided the team to a seventh place finish, winning the coach of the year award.

In 2018, he was poached by Mombasa based side Bandari FC in the same capacity. The following year, he lead Bandari to the final of the Sportpesa Super Cup final and lost 1-0 to Kariobangi Sharks in a tough contest held in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

The same year year he guided the dockers to win the Sportpesa Shield trophy and book a slot of representing Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup competitions.

In early 2020, he was fired after a string of unconvincing results before making a comeback to coaching in 2021 when he landed on an assistant coach role with Kakamega Homeboyz.

When Nicholas Muyoti left Homeboyz for Nairobi City Stars FC in September 2021, club owner Cleophas Shimanyula elevated Mwalala to become the head coach.

In his first season, he was about to end up the dominance of Tusker FC retaining the league title but his efforts made the club lose the league battle by a whisker, The Brewer’s winning it on a goal difference margin. With him failing to win the league title, he was shown the door in June 2022.

His first task at Ulinzi Stars will be to help the club finish in a convincing position after last season’s 13th place finish, the worst ever finish in over two decades.
