Wambui Mukenyi is a Kenyan fashion designer that specializes in workplace attire and wedding gowns.
The Wambui Mukenyi brand was founded a few years ago, with her initial collection of six pieces doing well in the market.
Wambui’s brand is a work in progress, and she is always finding new methods to keep her clientele happy.
Building the business from scratch
She did not yet have a store, but following the success of her first collection, which was mostly African dress, she decided to open one.
However, it took time for her to analyze the market and learn what clients need.
When she first started, the most difficult issue was assembling a solid team.
“You can have excellent ideas, but it doesn’t make sense if you don’t have a wonderful team to work with.”
Since then, she has been on a learning curve, and she is constantly learning. Her passion for fashion led her away from her first training as an accountant.
Online research
Since she comes from an accounting background, Wambui used reading to learn everything she could about the fashion industry and what it takes to be a designer. “I’m a great reader. “I spend most of my morning online reading about public relations and company strategy.”
Wambui likes to read Fashion Trends, Fashion Focus, and PR pieces from across the world in the mornings. She keeps up with what is going on in the fashion world on a global scale so that she can interpret it locally.
In terms of the fashion sector, she claims that people are starting to appreciate Kenyan fashion more than they did five years ago. “Because it’s a developing sector, we can see that consumers are embracing local fashion right now.”
