The US government has shown a greater inclination to review the Trump administration’s bilateral trade talks with Kenya on a potential free trade agreement (FTA).
This has led operations that were supposed to result in a payoff within two years and before the August 9 General Election to be halted.
Mutual consent
While in office, Mr Trump met with President Uhuru Kenyatta and struck a deal to establish official trade relations.
However, the intergovernmental talks have been put on hold until after the American presidential elections in November 2020.
Cancellation of the agreement
Nonetheless, the Biden administration launched a new comprehensive economic partnership with Kenya on Thursday, replacing an agreement negotiated with Nairobi by ex-President Donald Trump’s administration.
According to the US Trade Representative’s Office, the US and Kenyan governments will start working on a new strategy for cooperation in 10 areas, including agricultural, technical trade, environmental laws, and export promotion and customs operations, within three months.
