Atheists In Kenya Society members are calling on the government of Kenya to ban spiritual fasting in the country.

Their quest comes after reports from Nairobi emerged that a woman was found dead at her residence in Embakasi. According to the police report, the woman is said could have passed away to starvation.

The 78 aged lady was found dead in Nyayo Estate on Monday last week after a long spell of prayer and fasting which is assumed to have started on May 18.

In a press statement, Atheists In Kenya Society president Harrison Mumia says fasting has the potential of affecting one’s physical health.

“ One eliminating the intake of food and water for a certain period of time can lead to a major negative effect on his/her health and can even cause death,” Mr Mumia said.

“The public should be sensitized on the health challenges of starving for a prolonged periods. We urge the government to regulate the dangerous religious practices in the country,” he stated.

The police officers who toured the deceased house are said to have found a timetable indicating the fasting schedule. The woman was believed to have succumbed a bit earlier after her lifeless body was discovered last week.
