Escalators FC were crowned as the champions of the Jambobet Tournament on Sunday afternoon (19/6/2022) after beating well composed FIFA Best 1-0 to clinch the title at BP Grounds in Riruta.

Escalators, a team from Kawangware in Dagoretti South constituency seemed to be underdogs but they broke the barriers and shocked the naysayers that tipped FIFA Best FC to shine. This year’s tournament was one of the most entertaining finals, with fans from all over the city travelling to enjoy a total showdown.

The champions, Escalators FC team comprised of talented players hailing from Dagoretti south constituency. The team showed a lot of prowess and maturity in the game even though they had few chances in front of the goal. That wasn’t an easy task for Escalators strikers as the opposition strong wall of defense was mounted by the Kenyan Premier League side Tusker player, Wellington Ochieng who was captaining FIFA Best FC.

Escalators utilized their one and only attempt on goal past the opponent’s goalkeeper just 23 minutes into the second half. Kevin Roro scored the lone goal of the much-anticipated final in the 68th minute, which turned out to be the decider.

FIFA Best scored in the dying minutes, but the referee decision ruled the goal as an offside. It would be ruled out for offside by the centre referee, giving Escalators a much-awaited win after so long.

Before the final clash, on Sunday evening was a third-place play-off tie between Leeds FC, who diminished Bundez FC’s hopes of emerging in the top three. Leeds FC coached by Ken Odhiambo edged out Bundez in a post-match penalty by 3-0 after a stalemate during the official ninety minutes of play.
Escalators walked away with Ksh. 150,000 from Jambobet, with Fifa Best clinching a sum of Ksh. 100,000. Leeds FC took home Ksh 75,000 after emerging position three, with Bundez receiving Ksh. 50,000.

Timothy Wamalwa, the event coordinator, urged organizations to support the talented footballers in the country as they would help generate revenue for the country. That is the case with Nigeria, England, Cameroon, Senegal and Egypt, among other countries. He also added that Jambobet is now looking to organize nationwide football events in search of talented youths. That will, in turn, allow scouts to easily pick soccer stars around the country.
“Plans are underway to organize another tournament in Mathare before we can now move to upcountry regions,” said the tournament’s coordinator.

The Jambobet tourney drew 75 clubs, with each club heading home with something in their pockets for participating. Beatrice Elachi, former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker and aspiring Dagoretti South MP, was also in attendance. She said it was time to streamline football in the country as it has employed many youths. All participating-team captains thanked Jambobet for organizing the thrilling tournament in Dagoretti south.
