Mathare United FC have been relegated from the Kenyan Premier League after over two decades in the Kenya top tier league. This comes after the club failed to turn up for a league match for the third time in a row against Sofapaka FC today (Friday).
Mathare United, a 2008 KPL who’s suffering from “Extreme” tough financial constraints had earlier on failed to appear against Bandari FC and Ulinzi Stars FC two weeks ago due to lack of funds to help them sustain the expenses.
In a statement released by who were to be their host’s today, Sofapaka FC issued an update on their social media handles confirming the absence of Slum Boy’s.
According to the Football Kenya Federation rules, a team is relegated if they fail to honour three matches in a single season.
They now become the second club in the Kenyan Premier League era to suffer this predicament after Sony Sugar FC was also relegated for the same reasons in the 2019-20 season.
Mathare boasts of being one of few Kenyan clubs that has laid down structures of tapping players from the grassroot level through their legendary brand and firm Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). Among the notable alumnus of MYSA who eventually came to feature for Mathare United FC and become bigwigs in the Kenyan football scene include Harambee stars all time scorer Dennis Oliech, Norway based goalkeeper Arnold Origi, twins Simeon and Titus Mulama, Anthony Kimani (Bandari FC coach) and former Harambee stars coach Francis Kimanzi who’s guidance earned their maiden top flight title in 2008.
