If Kenya Railways is successful in modernizing the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, traffic bottlenecks may soon be a thing of the past (NCRS).
NCRS is a large-scale initiative aimed at putting an end to the turmoil and disorder that has plagued the public transportation system for decades.
It entails the establishment of a city commuter system with sophisticated passenger trains capable of transporting 60 million people each year. Kenya Railways managing director Philip Mainga stated that the railway lines would be revamped in collaboration with the Kenya Defense Forces and the National Youth Service.
Since 2019, Kenya Railways has been undergoing reforms. The re-furbished Nairobi Central Railway Station was commissioned by President Kenyatta on November 10, 2020.
The project cost Sh3.6 billion and includes the repair of the city’s 250-kilometer railway system, including the Konza line in Makueni, as well as the rehabilitation of stations across the country.
Mr Mainga explained that feasibility studies were conducted to determine the scope, technical specifics, and development structure before monies were spent in the city rail project.
They’re currently working on putting the plan into action.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Master Plan includes a city commuter rail service development project.
All of the country’s transportation hubs will be linked.
